Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) seeks applications for one (1) senior core associate or professor position in Arabic Language or Linguistics. Core faculty positions are full-time positions designed to replicate the institutional commitment to academic freedom and professional opportunities associated with tenure-track appointments, in compliance with Georgetown University's academic governance guidelines.
GU-Q seeks a new director to help turn its Arabic language program into a proficiency-based program with a strong experiential learning component. The new director will oversee building a programmatic identity that leverages Georgetown University's international distinction and GU-Q's geopolitical significance. PhD in Arabic language, applied linguistics, or a relevant field is required. We are particularly interested in candidates with previous experience teaching Arabic to heritage learners. The ideal candidate should have stature and experience in programmatic leadership with qualifications in applied linguistics or language pedagogy and experience in an American university context. Candidates should have native fluency in Modern Standard Arabic; experience in proficiency-based, communicative approaches to teaching the language; and be familiar with proficiency testing and ACTFEL standards. Candidates are expected to engage in curriculum design and instructional material development, mentor students, and participate in student outreach programs. Candidates will teach a mix of instructional Arabic and content courses. We seek candidates who can contribute, through their teaching, research, and service, to the diversity and excellence of our academic community; those with a track record of success in undergraduate education and experience working with diverse, multilingual students are of particular interest to us. Candidates with experience developing or leading Arabic language programs, or with other relevant leadership experience, are especially welcome. The successful applicant will take their place at a top-ranking research institution, and will have as colleagues a team of internationally-recognized scholars.
GU-Q provides generous research support and support for conference travel. Faculty at Georgetown University in Qatar are eligible to apply for GU-Q Faculty Research Funds and the Qatar National Research Fund's Academic Research Grant and National Research Program. Colleagues with senior core faculty status are eligible to apply for periodic research sabbaticals.
The teaching load is 2-2. GU-Q boasts best-in-class teaching facilities, including a Global Classroom for classes connecting students in Washington, D.C., and Doha.
Compensation is very competitive in relation to the US academic market and even more so to that of the UK and Europe. It includes an annual summer research stipend for active scholars amounting to 2/9 of the base salary.
