    The Arabic Program at Franklin & Marshall College invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Arabic Language and Literature/ Cultural Studies beginning Fall 2014 pending final administrative approval. Position is renewable for a second year if candidate demonstrates teaching excellence and/or continued administrative approval. Preference will be given to applicants with the PhD, but ABD's will be considered at the rank of Visiting Instructor. Teaching load is 3/2 and the candidate should be able to teach all levels of Arabic, although primary duties will be teaching upper-level courses including literature and culture courses in Arabic and English at the undergraduate level.

    Faculty Position in Arab Intellectual Thought and Culture, American University of Sharjah

    The Department of Arabic and Translation Studies at the American University of Sharjah invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor (subject to budgetary approval).

    Applicants must have a PhD upon appointment in the fields of Heritage and Arab Intellectual Thought and Culture, Classical Arabic Literature, Islamic Studies or other related areas. The selected candidate will be expected to teach courses on Arab and Islamic heritage and culture.

    Solid knowledge of the Arabic culture and heritage, and training in Western methodologies are essential. The language of instruction in this department is English, but native or near-native proficiency in Arabic is required. Preference will be given to dynamic applicants with good research record and experience at the university level in a liberal arts environment.

    The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures (MLLC) invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in Arabic Language and Literatures or Cultural Studies, beginning September 1, 2014. Knowledge of the Eastern Mediterranean and modern Middle East from an interdisciplinary and/or comparative perspective strongly preferred. Must be able to supervise and teach in the Arabic language program, as well as develop and teach courses in English within a field of specialization that would enrich the MLLC department’s course offerings. Typical teaching load is two courses per semester.

    2014 Academic Positions

    Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy, a leader in language learning for middle and high school students, seeks Residential Academic Staff for the 2014 season. MMLA, an intensive four-week language immersion program, offers students opportunities to study Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, or Spanish with skilled educators at three sites across the US and one in Beijing, China.

    The Academic Staff are part of a community that creates an intensive four-week immersion program for middle and high school students each summer. They plan and implement cultural classes, the MMLA Immersion Curriculum, and participate in all academy programming.

    At MMLA, students of five languages learn via a specially designed MMLA Immersion Curriculum. All instructional staff are required to participate in pre-season curriculum training to understand MMLA’s educational mission and vision and to master and implement the immersion curriculum by adopting and practicing the Middlebury Immersion Methodology. All staff and students adopt the Middlebury Language Pledge© so that a full immersion environment is created.

    The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Arabic Literature, to begin Fall 2014.     The Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan is seeking to fill a position in Arabic Studies at the rank of tenure-track Assistant or tenured Associate Professor, beginning September 2014. This is a university-year (nine-month) appointment. Candidates must already hold the PhD and are expected to have native or near-native proficiency in both Arabic and English. Candidates must produce evidence of substantial, innovative research in their fields of specialization. Those candidates whose teaching and research focus on religious and cultural movements and trends in the contemporary Arab world, and on Islamic law in particular, are especially encouraged to apply, as are those with an active interest in areas pertaining to Arabic language study and curriculum.     The Department of International Studies at Texas A&M University announces an entry-level assistant professor tenure-track position in the area of Transnational Studies. Candidates must be prepared to teach a variety of courses in our large, interdisciplinary International Studies degree program that combines humanities-based research with the social sciences. The department is also home to modern language majors (French, German, Russian) and minors (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian).

    The Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures at the University of New Mexico is seeking to fill a Lecturer II position in Arabic beginning in August 2014. The successful candidate will contribute to the pedagogical goals of a department seeking to expand its offerings in critical languages and in the internationalization of our campus and programs. We currently have a tenure-track Assistant Professor with whom this Lecturer will work closely in building courses and programs in Arabic.

    The position will involve teaching a base load of twelve credits a semester.

    The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the teaching of undergraduate courses in Arabic language. S/he will also develop upper-division courses in the context of an expanded Arabic program. This person will help create courses and programs to expand Arabic at UNM. S/he will interact with other programs and departments across campus such as Asian Studies and International Studies.

    Salary and benefits are competitive.

    This position requires an M.A. in hand by time of appointment in a field of Arabic language, literature, applied linguistics, and/or pedagogy. Native or near-native fluency in modern standard Arabic and at least one dialect is expected. Also required is native or near–native fluency in written and spoken English.
