Colgate University Visiting Assistant or Associate Professor

The Program in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at Colgate University (MIST) announces an opening for a full-time one-year Visiting Assistant or Associate Professor position or a full-time Lecturer in the Arabic Language. This position may be renewed contingent upon excellent performance and institutional need. The successful candidate will join the university’s thriving Arabic program beginning in August 2014.

Responsibilities:

  • The appointee will teach five classes per academic year (3/2 or 2/3) at all levels (introductory to advanced) with a possibility of teaching one content-based course.
  • The successful candidate will contribute collaboratively to curriculum development in the program, advise students, and perform department and university service.

Requirements:

  • The appointee must have advanced training in a relevant area of Arabic studies at the time of appointment (Ph.D. preferred for the one-year Visiting Assistant or Associate Professor position; ABD or MA for the Lecturer position).
  • The successful candidate must also have the following qualifications: native or near-native proficiency in Arabic (MSA and at least one dialect) and English;
  • experience in the latest trends in Arabic language pedagogy, curriculum design, and material development; and substantial classroom experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching Arabic as a foreign language (MSA and a dialect) in an academic setting in a proficiency-based and communicative framework.
